How Will Your Role Impact First Command?

The Principal Data Scientist will possess a deep understanding of data science principles, advanced analytical methods, and have a proven track record of leveraging data to drive business insights and strategies. This role requires a strategic thinker who can lead complex projects, mentor junior team members, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve organizational goals.

 

What will you do in this role?

 

·        Lead the data science practice, providing guidance, mentorship, and support to ensure high performance and professional growth.

·        Develop and implement data science strategies that align with business objectives and drive measurable results.

·        Collaborate with senior management to identify opportunities for leveraging data to drive business solutions.

·        Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in data science and machine learning.

·        Design, develop, and deploy advanced data analytics, statistical models, and machine learning algorithms to solve complex business problems.

·        Analyze large and diverse datasets to extract actionable insights, identify trends, and support decision-making processes.

·        Ensure the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of data used for analysis and modeling.

·        Develop and maintain robust data pipelines, workflows, and processes to support analytics and machine learning initiatives.

·        Work closely with cross-functional teams to integrate data-driven insights into business strategies.

·        Present findings and recommendations to stakeholders at all levels, translating complex data concepts into clear and actionable insights.

·        Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment that encourages knowledge sharing and continuous learning.

Supervisory Responsibility

None initially – future supervisory for data scientist team may be required

 

What skills & qualifications do you need?

Education

·        Master’s degree in data science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field required. PhD preferred.

Work Experience

·        Minimum of 8 years of experience in data science, or a related field, with a proven track record of leading successful projects.

·        6+ years of experience with general-purpose programming language (e.g. Python, R, SQL)

·        6+ years of experience with big data technologies (e.g. Hadoop, Spark)

·        6+ years of experience with statistical analysis, machine learning, predictive modeling, and data mining techniques

·        6+ years of experience with natural language processing (NLP) and deep learning techniques.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

·        Expertise in applying a broad variety of statistical concepts to business problems and a strong sense of when to adapt/combine approaches to suit the problem at hand.

·        Experience driving projects or programs that have had a proven impact on business strategy and performance through analytical skills.

·        Experience advising, presenting to, and serving as a thought partner to leadership at all levels of an organization.

·        Proficiency in programming languages and experience with big data technologies.

·        Strong expertise in data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) and experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure).

·        Experience with developing and deploying LLMs (Large Language Models)

·        Experience with generative AI

·        Experience developing and deploying AI governance frameworks

·        Publications or contributions to the data science community (e.g., conferences, journals).

·        Experience in the financial services industry

·        Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think strategically and act tactically.

·        Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

·        Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, and adapt to changing priorities.

·        Strong leadership and mentorship abilities, with a commitment to fostering a positive team culture.
