As a Senior Data Scientist, you will be at the forefront of our data analytics initiatives, driving innovation and strategy. You will develop and implement advanced statistical models and algorithms, providing oversight and guidance to our data team. Your expertise will ensure compliance with data policies and the maintenance of our data warehouse. Additionally, you will support leadership in crafting long-term data strategies, manage technical infrastructure, and present data science strategies and performance. Your role will also involve mentoring team members, refining reports, and staying abreast of the latest data science trends. The Senior Data Scientist is responsible for providing management and oversight of the use of appropriate methods and techniques in the research, design and implementation of data analytics. Provides oversight on maintaining assessment criteria for continual development of data analytics models including compliance with appropriate storage of data in regard to Federal, State, Texas A&M System, and Texas A&M University policies, procedures. Manages the process to maintain standards, technical infrastructure, data management and data algorithm development efforts for future uses, as well as a compliance review. Implements recommended data deficiencies within units and assess outcomes.

The Texas Real Estate Research Center was founded in 1971 by an act of the Texas Legislature. The Center’s enabling legislation defines a broad mandate to “conduct studies in all areas related directly or indirectly to real estate and/or urban or rural economics.” In addition to research programs in residential, commercial, and rural land economics, the Center maintains administrative, data, and communications teams to support its research agenda. What You Need To Know:

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to the selected hire’s experience.

This is an applied research position with no possibility for tenure and has no teaching assignments. Publication requirements are met through the Center’s quarterly magazine, TG, and ad-hoc technical reports released on the Center’s website. Center publications serve the broader real estate industry, banking practitioners, government officials and lay audiences. Research must be designed with these groups in mind.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, applied mathematics/statistics or related fields.

  • Ten years of related experience in building and maintaining data warehouses and performing business intelligence or analysis on large enterprise datasets for decision makers.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of advanced statistical analysis, interactive data visualization, programming or similar software applications. Knowledge of the use of data mining.

  • Ability to research and develop statistical learning models for data analysis.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to complete assignments timely and efficiently.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Economics, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Informatics, or related field.

  • More than six years of practical experience with data processing and complex multivariate statistical analyses.

  • Experience supervising a data science or computer science team.

  • Experience managing very large datasets for business intelligence, operations or applied research tasks.

  • Experience managing and preparing standard public and private vendor data sources used in real estate market analysis or economic models (e.g. CoreLogic, Costar, RealPage, Census, BLS, etc.)

Essential Duties/Tasks:

Data Analysis:

  • Develops a set of statistical models and algorithms, which includes identifying, assessing, measuring, and monitoring of data analytics. Manages and oversees the use of appropriate methods and techniques in the research, design and implementation of data analytics.

  • Develops, models, and implements useful quantitative methods and makes recommendations to base on the statistical assessment of subjects.

  • Guides and gives oversight to data analysts, database administrators and data scientists on implementation of the Center’s data strategy and develops training for Center staff on effective use of data, statistical methods and techniques.

Datawarehouse Maintenance:

  • Manages the process to maintain standards, technical infrastructure, data management and data algorithm development efforts for future uses, as well as a compliance review. Implements recommended data deficiencies within units and assess outcomes.

  • Provides management and oversight of the documentation of statistical methods and techniques used in the preparation and statistical analysis algorithms. Recommends actions for review based on findings and assists with the implementation of activities. 

  • Refines and draws reports. Presents on data science departmental performance as well as proposed data science and analytics strategies. Models complex discovery insights and identifies operational opportunities by statistical, visualization, and mining techniques.

  • Maintains an understanding of new and leading data science and analytic practices, trends, design, learning, and development cycles.

  • Provides oversight and guidance to data team members in their development, analysis and maintenance activities.

Data Strategy and Development:

  • Supports Center leadership in creating and implementing a long-term data strategy that includes identification, acquisition, maintenance, and deployment of data to support the research and communications mandates of the Center.

  • Provides a strategic role, in the formulation of new and creative ways with leveraging the university's vast collection of data and data sources. Works with large sets of data and aids in establishing scalable analytic systems across multiple systems.

  • Provides oversight on maintaining assessment criteria for continual development of data analytics models including compliance with appropriate storage of data regarding Federal, State, Texas A&M System, and Texas A&M University policies, procedures.

  • Aids in the development of big data capabilities, frameworks, and governance processes in the department enabling more effective execution of data and analytics campaigns.
