Mechanical Design Engineer, Part-Time AI Design Evaluation - Remote (United States)
OpenTrain AI• $40–$90 per hour
• 100% remote
• Part-time
• About 15 hours a week, you choose when
Work on the cutting edge of AI design tools, on your own schedule, and get paid for the mechanical design expertise you already have.
The AI systems everyone is talking about are trained and tested by real mechanical engineers. The teams building them need experts who can study complex CAD assemblies, create difficult design questions, judge whether the AI's reasoning is accurate and supported by the model, and explain where its answer falls short. Your judgment helps shape the next generation of AI systems for technical work. This is that work, done remotely around your current job.
What you'll do
• Review multi-part CAD assemblies to identify the design intent, key constraints, major decisions, and ways the design could fail
• Build difficult technical questions from CAD models, then check the answers against the models for defensibility
• Review AI-generated mechanical reasoning and identify conclusions that lack accuracy, completeness, clarity, or support
• When the model gives an unclear answer, revise the question and document unusual cases, points of disagreement, the reasoning, and how each conclusion can be traced back
Why this is worth your time
• Get paid $40–$90 an hour to build real AI skills, on top of your current job
• Work on AI systems that reason about CAD assemblies, testing their answers against the models and helping improve their accuracy
• Build practical experience applying mechanical design judgment to AI evaluation and clear model feedback
• Fully remote and flexible, no fixed shifts, no commute
Who this is for
• At least five years of experience creating multi-part mechanical assemblies and overseeing them from concept
• Demonstrate mastery of at least one of the major parametric CAD tools, such as Solid Edge, Onshape, Fusion, Inventor, CATIA, NX, Creo or SolidWorks
• Bring strong understanding of assembly design intent and tolerance judgment, with experience in mechanisms, kinematics, and GD&T, plus strong written communication in English
• No AI experience needed. You bring the mechanical design expertise; the work provides structured CAD-review evaluation tasks and feedback criteria.
Pay and details
• $40–$90 per hour, paid hourly as an independent contractor
• About 15 hours a week, you choose when; fully remote, United States
