DescriptionThis position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Senior Data Scientist in the United States and Canada.
This role offers an exciting opportunity to apply advanced machine learning and data science techniques to modernize energy grid forecasting and analytics. The Senior Data Scientist will lead efforts in short- and long-term load forecasting, distributed energy resource (DER) modeling, and operational grid analytics. You will work closely with data engineering, software, and cloud platform teams to implement scalable, automated, and accurate forecasting models. The position demands a combination of technical expertise, utility domain knowledge, and strong communication skills to translate complex analyses into actionable insights. Working remotely, you will mentor junior team members, influence analytical strategy, and contribute to innovative energy solutions with measurable impact.
Accountabilities
As a Senior Data Scientist, you will:
- Design, build, and maintain hierarchical, probabilistic, and physics-aware load and DER forecasting models.
- Model EV, PV, battery storage, demand response, and electrification adoption to quantify impacts on grid operations.
- Conduct end-to-end power system data analyses including scenario modeling, uncertainty quantification, and causal-impact evaluation.
- Ingest, curate, and manage large-scale time-series data from AMI, SCADA, weather, and DER telemetry within cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP).
- Containerize models, implement CI/CD pipelines, and ensure version control with MLOps tools (MLflow, SageMaker, Kubeflow).
- Monitor model drift, bias, and KPIs, and trigger automated retraining while maintaining SOC-2-compliant audit trails.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to translate analytical methods and results into actionable insights for utility planners, operators, and regulators.
- Mentor junior data scientists, lead research initiatives, and present findings at industry forums.
RequirementsCandidates should have:
- 8+ years of experience in advanced statistics or machine learning on large-scale time-series data, with at least 3 years focused on utility load or DER forecasting.
- BS/MS in Data Science, Statistics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field; PhD, PE license, or peer-reviewed energy analytics publications preferred.
- Expertise in Python (pandas, scikit-learn, XGBoost, PyTorch/TensorFlow), PySpark/SQL, and cloud analytics (Azure Databricks or equivalent).
- Proficiency with hierarchical time-series, quantile regression, ensemble trees, Prophet, LSTM/Transformer networks, and scenario analysis.
- Familiarity with ISO/RTO market rules, IRP/DSIP filings, demand-response and VPP measurement & verification, and grid operational constraints.
- Hands-on experience with data governance, security, PII minimization, RBAC, encryption, and compliance in regulated environments.
- Strong communication skills to translate technical analyses into actionable business insights for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating across distributed teams.
Benefits - Comprehensive health and wellness benefits including medical, dental, and vision with 100% premium coverage for employees.
- Generous paid time off (PTO) and holidays.
- MyShare Employee Ownership Program.
- Opportunities to work with industry leaders and gain exposure to cutting-edge energy analytics projects.
- 401(k) plan with up to 4% match, 100% vested from day 1.
- Flexible work arrangements including hybrid and remote possibilities.
- Occasional travel (up to 10%) as needed to support projects.
