STEM Expert - Chemistry and Computational Chemistry (PhD)
OpenTrain AIEvaluate chemistry AI systems on your own schedule and help improve their scientific reasoning.
The AI systems shaping scientific research are trained and tested by real experts. The teams building them need chemists and computational chemists who can create difficult, realistic problems, judge whether an AI's answers are scientifically sound, write the answer a specialist would give, and explain subtle errors the model has made. Your judgment helps shape the next generation of AI models for scientific work. This is that work, done remotely.
What you'll do
• Build and critique chemistry problems and multi-step reasoning used to benchmark AI models
• Check AI answers on reaction mechanisms, synthesis planning, spectroscopy, molecular simulation and electronic structure methods
• Review protocols, simulation settings and software configurations for accuracy and reproducibility
• Analyze chemical, spectroscopic and simulation data, explain your findings clearly and recommend improvements
Why this is worth your time
• Build practical AI evaluation skills while earning $45–$90 an hour reviewing chemistry answers
• Work on AI systems that answer chemistry questions, checking their reasoning and helping improve their scientific accuracy
• Build practical experience applying synthesis, spectroscopy and simulation judgment to AI model evaluation and clear written feedback
• Fully remote and flexible, no fixed shifts, no commute
Who this is for
• A PhD in chemistry, computational chemistry, chemical biology or materials science, or a closely related field
• Research experience: hands-on wet-lab work in an experimental specialty, or extensive simulation-based research in a computational one
• Deep expertise in one or more fields of chemistry: organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, computational, materials or cheminformatics
• Professional English for written and spoken work at C1 level or higher
• Working skill in Python or in scientific packages such as Gaussian, ORCA, Psi4, GROMACS, LAMMPS or RDKit
• Strong quantitative, analytical and scientific reasoning, with rigorous problem-solving and clear technical communication
• Helpful background: postdoctoral, research scientist or faculty experience; peer-reviewed publications or patents; open-source scientific software; or work on AI-assisted chemistry benchmarking, drug discovery, reaction prediction or retrosynthesis
• No AI experience needed. You bring the chemistry expertise.
Pay and details
• $45–$90 per hour, paid hourly as an independent contractor
• Part-time, flexible schedule; fully remote, United States
